Getting started
Project templates
The shape of a job you run more than once, so the next project starts laid out.
Most teams run the same kind of job again and again: a client project, a website, a campaign, an event. The lists are the same, most of the tasks are the same, and the only things that change are the dates and the people. A template is that shape, kept.
Starting a project from one
On the Projects page, New project has a Start from choice. Leave it on A blank project and you get what you always got: one list called Tasks, nothing in it. Pick a template and the project arrives with its lists made and its tasks in them, subtasks included. A line under the picker says what you are about to get — 3 lists, 12 tasks — and names the lists.
Every team can start from four of ours:
- Client project — kick-off, the work, wrap-up. The shape most client work takes.
- Website launch — plan, design, build, launch, with a pre-launch check whose subtasks block it.
- Marketing campaign — brief, make, review, run.
- Event — before, on the day, after.
A template carries no dates and no owners. It does not know when your job starts or who is on your team, so the tasks arrive open, unassigned and undated, at the priority the template gave them. Set the dates that matter and hand things out, the way you would on any project.
Everything else about the project is ordinary. Starting from a template counts as one project against your plan's room for active projects, exactly like a blank one, and the project's history opens with a line saying which template it came from.
Saving your own
Once you have run a project the way you like, keep its shape. Open the project, press Settings, and choose Save as a template. Give it a name and it is saved with the project's lists in order and every task that is still part of the plan, with their subtasks. Canceled tasks are left out, and so are the dates and the people.
The project itself is untouched. Your template is now under Start from on the Projects page, above the four starters, for everyone on the team who makes projects. Only an admin can save one.
Names are unique within a team, so a second "Client project" is refused rather than doubled up. A project with nothing in it yet cannot be saved as a template; give it some lists or tasks first.
Seeing and removing them
Team settings → Project templates lists the ones your team has saved, with what each holds. Remove takes one off the list; it asks first. A project you already started from it is not changed in any way, because a project keeps no link back to its template.
Our four starters cannot be removed.
